  109.         Program X is an integrated and low cost Fringe Science (UFO, 
  110. Cryptozoology and Paranormal) Database and Analysis Program.  The many
  111. features are too numerous to mention here but include:

  130.         If you have a Demo/Shareware Version of Program X some features will
  131. not be available until registered.  The most notable is the inability to add
  132. more than 10 events per year.  Once Registered all functions of the Program
  133. will be available.

  137. * INSTALLING PROGRAM X WITH DOS
  138.  
  139. 1. Make a directory on your hard disk drive, such as PX
  140.    (To Make a directory under plain dos just type MKDIR PX)
  141. 2. Change to That Directory (CD PX)
  142. 3. Copy PX1.EXE into that directory 
  143. 4. PX1.EXE is a self extracting Archive.  It will the unarchive all the
  144.    support files into the directory.
  145.    (NOTE: You may have this file in a "zip" or archived version.  You will
  146.     need an unarchiver [such as pkunzip, etc.] to unarchive it.)
  147. 5. Then just run PX.EXE . (You cannot run Program X from the path statement
  148.    but must be in the actual directory to run it)
  149.  
  150. * INSTALLING PROGRAM X WITH DESQVIEW
  151.  
  152. 1. Follow Dos steps 1-4 Above.
  153. 2. From the DesqView menu choose add a program. All the parameters should
  154.    be the same as the Big Dos 
  155. 3. Program X should be run from a Full Window under Desqview
  156.  
  157. * INSTALLING PROGRAM X WITH OS/2
  158.  
  159. 1. Open a dos session and follow Dos steps 1-4 above
  160. 2. You may use the Run command or select a program icon for Program X
  161. 3. Program X should be run from a Full Window under os/2
  162.  
  163. * INSTALLING PROGRAM X WITH WINDOWS 3.11
  164.  
  165. 1. Click on Main Icon
  166. 2. Click on Ms-Dos Prompt
  167. 3. Follow DOS steps 1 - 4 as described above
  168. 4. type EXIT
  169. 5. Close your Main Window
  170. 6. Under File from the Program Manager Select NEW
  171. 7. Select New Program Group
  172. 8. In Description type Programx or Fringe or Whatever you want
  173. 9. Under File from the Program Manager Select NEW
  174. 8. Select New Program Item
  175. 9. On Description type ProgramX
  176. 10. On Command line type c:\px\px.exe
  177. 11. On Working Directory type c:\px
  178. 12. Select an icon if you wish
  179. 13. Select OK
  180. 14. Program X is now installed in Windows

  182. (Confused?  Here's a Quicker Method. Follow Steps 1 - 3 above.  Once that's
  183. Done just type PX .  When you're done with Program X just type EXIT and
  184. it will bring you back to Windows.)

  187. NOTE: IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND ANY OF THE STEPS ABOVE JUST INSTALL PROGRAM X
  188. AS YOU WOULD ANY PROGRAM THAT YOU HAVE INSTALLED IN THE PAST.

  190. * ABOUT YOUR NAME AND PASSWORD
  191.  
  192.         To safeguard your Data and to trace any unauthorized distribution
  193. of registered copies of Program X; you must enter your name and a password
  194. you received from Compu<>Link when you registered the program.
  195. PLEASE SAVE THE RECEIPT THAT CAME WITH YOUR REGISTRATION DISK.  THIS HAS
  196. YOUR REGISTRATION NAME AND PASSWORD NEEDED TO UNLOCK ALL THE FEATURES

  199. * ABOUT THE DATABASES (*.DAT)
  200.  
  201.         Almost 99% of the over 1000 entries deal with UFOs.  The reason for
  202. this is that UFO data was more available and better organized.  Most
  203. Cryptozoology sightings I could find were in the form of "back in the summer
  204. of [pick a year] on some mountains in [pick a state]"; which gave 
  205. practically no way of verifying or organizing the data.  That's why there's
  206. only 15 or so Cryptozoological entries in the databases.  The paranormal
  207. data was even more difficult and un-organized, that's why there's only 
  208. around 5 Paranormal entries in the database.
  209.         All 3 'fringe sciences' are combined in the yearly data.  If you
  210. focus primarily on the cryptozoological and/or paranormal fields you may
  211. want to delete all your *.dat files and just start over since there are
  212. so few records for those fields.
  213.

  239.   Use [CTRL] + Red Letter, Left, Right, Up, Down ARROW Keys, [ENTER] and [ESC]

  241. The Top line contains Sub Menus.  The Sub Menus are: Ufology, Cryptozoology, 
  242. Paranormal, Archives, Graphs, Entertainment and Help.  Notice that the HELP 
  243. Sub Menu is Already "pulled down" for you when you start the program.
  244. To Access a particular feature from a SUB MENU use the up and down arrow
  245. keys or press the letter HIGHLITED in WHITE.
  246.  
  247. To Move Between Sub Menus use the left and right arrow keys.  Notice that
  248. the Sub Menu you're currently on is in Bright Green and Grey.  Press the Down
  249. Arrow Key or ENTER to "Pull Down" a particular highlighted sub menu.
  250.  
  251. You May also hold down the control key (Ctrl) and press a letter in RED and
  252. the selected sub menu will be accessed and pulled down.
  253.  
  254. When the program asks you to select a year, you will be given a scroll box
  255. from which to pick from.  Use the up and down arrow keys and page up and
  256. page down keys to move the highlight bar. Press [ENTER] to select.
  257.  
  258. ! Mouse Features were not included in this Version of Program X.  If 
  259.   you are accessing Program X from a windows type environment and the
  260.   mouse cursor is present it will not work.  Instead use the keyboard as
  261.   described above to navigate the program.  If there is a big demand for
  262.   mouse support we may put the routines in the next version.

  290. * Enter UFO Data:  Allows you to enter recent sightings/events.  Use the arrow 
  291. keys to navigate and [CTRL]-F10 (Press down on the control key and press F10 
  292. key) to save.  [ESC] will abort the entry.
  293. * Edit UFO Data : Allows you to edit entered sightings/events.  Same keys are 
  294. used as above.
  295. * Browse UFO Data by Date : Enter the Month, Day and Year.  If any sightings 
  296. for that date are in the database then it will be displayed.
  297. * Browse UFO Data by Keyword : This will search the following fields - 
  298. Description, County, City, State, Country , Classification and sounds.
  299. * Export to Dbase III file : Will export an entire year's records to a Dbase 
  300. III format type file.
  301.  - The data outputted hasn't been tested on the latest version of dbase
  302. * Export to Lotus 123 file : Will export the following data for an entire 
  303. year's record to a lotus 123 type 2 file - Description , Date, Classification, 
  304. Time, State, City, Country and Sounds.
  305.  - The data outputted hasn't been tested on the latest version of lotus 123
  306. * Print Daily, Monthly and Yearly Records : Will print to file or line printer 
  307. specified specifications of records.
  308. * Delete a Record (Global command) : This will delete a record from a year no 
  309. matter what type of record (ufo, crypto or para)
  310. * Make Web Page : This will format HTML type pages for you to display your 
  311. sightings database on the web.  You select the years you want the web pages to 
  312. be created for.  These will appear on your disk as U(year).HTM . For example, 
  313. if you wanted a web page for 1995 sightings the web page created would be 
  314. U1995.HTM on your disk.  A Main Menu Web page will also be created that will 
  315. 'link' your yearly database web pages for easy access.  This web page is 
  316. called PROGRAMX.HTM.  After you are finished upload all .HTM (*.HTM) files to 
  317. your web site and interface PROGRAMX.HTM with your index web page. [A 
  318. fundemental knowledge of how the world wide web operates is necessary to 
  319. understand how to upload the htm files to your website and to 'link' them to 
  320. your main index page]. (Cryptozoology pages will be in the format of 
  321. C[YEAR].HTM and Paranormal pages will be in the format of G[YEAR].HTM)
  322.  
  323. --------- Programs Needed to Process Outgoing and Incoming Sightings ---------
  324.  
  325. For processing INCOMING SIGHTINGS VIA EMAIL:
  326. You will need an email program that can recognize a particular subject line 
  327. and append the incoming email to a file. The basics are this :
  328.  
  329. - Create a file called MAILING.LST with a regular text editor.  The first line 
  330. must be the path where the text file PROGRAMX.DAT  will be appended to 
  331. by your mailer.  All the rest of the lines are the recipients email addresses 
  332. of new sightings you enter. There must be NO BLANK LINES AT THE END OF THE 
  333. TEXT FILE. An example MAILING.LST file:
  334.

  338. - You must have an emailer that can recognize certain phrases in a subject 
  339. line and append incoming messages with a certain subject line to a text file. 
  340. I HIGHLY recommend Pegasus Mail emailer.  This emailer can be run on dos, 
  341. windows and mac machines, and it's free.  Pegasus Mail can be found on the 
  342. internet; just go to a WWW search engine and do a "Pegasus Mail" in the search 
  343. field and it will show you all locations it can be found at.  Email me if you 
  344. have trouble locating it.  The example below is how I set up PEGASUS MAIL for 
  345. Windows to process incoming sightings:
  346. 1) In Pegasus Mail, Select "Edit New Mail Filtering Rules"
  347. 2) Select "In These Headers" and "Subject"
  348. 3) For trigger text put "PROGRAMX SIGHTING REPORT"
  349. 4) Then enter the path and name to your programx.dat (ie: 
  350. c:\pmail\mail\programx.dat)
  351.  
  352. To Send sightings you enter to others via email:
  353. Create the MAILING.LST file as shown above.  ProgramX will automatically make 
  354. email messages to send.  When done, enter PEGASUS MAIL and select send queured 
  355. email. IMPORTANT: THE FIRST LINE OF YOUR MAILING.LST MUST BE THE PATH WHERE 
  356. PEGASUS MAIL CAN FIND ITS OUTGOING MAIL.  FOR EXAMPLE - C:\PMAIL\MAIL . THERE 
  357. MUST NOT BE ANY BLANK LINES AT THE END OF THE TEXT FILE. THERE MUST NOT BE ANY 
  358. \ BACKSLASHES AT THE END OF THE PATH STATEMENT.

  362. * Process Incoming Sightings : This will have ProgramX input the path to your 
  363. programx.dat file and import incoming sightings from others into your 
  364. database. (see above for details)

  366. those you listed in MAILING.LST.  You will then need to run pegasus mail to 
  367. send the queued email. (see above for details)
  368. * State Summary Sightings : This will list the number of sightings per state 
  369. in a selected year.
  370. * Add a City to Map Data : This will allow you to add a city to the city 
  371. database that will be plotted on the U.S. Map of sightings.  You must know its 
  372. longitude and lattitude.
  373. * Delete a City from Map Data : Will allow you to delete a city from the map 
  374. database.
